Lately the term Geek has been thrown about as if all the world wants a piece of the pie and that everyone should be a Geek because then they are part of the in Crowd. There are now Sports Geeks, Political Geeks, Movie Geeks the list goes on and on…but at its heart…what is a Geek and why does everyone want to be one? Now I typically go for a much smaller lead in picture but I could not resist the simple idiocy of thinking that everything is Geek can continue…
…from the site www.geekologie.com there are actually 56 of these little critters and I think that we could probably add a couple hundred more if we sat down and really thought about it…but does this really bring Geek Culture together or does it water it down so completely that it is meaningless? For as long as I can remember I have been a Geek, part of what made me ok with that is that I really didn’t fit into a nice and neet box that could define who I was…I didn’t fit in and that is what made me a Geek.
I took a quick tour around the Web and doing a search on “Geek” on Google…man the times they have changed that is for sure.
Wikipedia has several definitions of Geek that really illustrate the muddied mess that Geeks have built for themselves:
So what do I see as the solution to the “watering down of the Geek Gene Pool” and bring our title that for the most part, true Geeks where with Pride back to its roots and expel the Johnny Come Lately’s that well add nothing to OUR culture and just don’t want to be left out of the great label game…well I am not alone in this. In the world of instant access, everyone can know everything…the problem is there are some people who should just stay in the dark.
I came across a leader for the new Geekdom…a fearless purveyor of truth who can bring us to the promised land…and guess what…he is on YouTube…long live Patton Oswalt and take a gander at his own personal Rant on the future of Geeks!
Well, I am not sure if that counts as a full on Rant but it felt good to get that off my chest. I am a Geek, shall forever be a Geek and no matter who decides the Geek de Jour nomenclature is, Geeks will always be a Class of their own.
