A Facebook Collapse, Browser Wars are heating up and "Me on the Web"

This past week we have seen the announcement that Facebook is preparing for an IPO in early 2012 and is likely to raise around $112 Billion from going public.  This is a big deal as the Social Network Giant is a huge reason as to why Social Networking now accounts for 1 in 6 minutes spent online each and every day.

But during the hub bub about the big dollars that a Facebook IPO would garner is the suspicion that while the Global User list continues to grow, there was a North American trend pointing to an drop of about 7.5 million users where Facebook got its start.

Note this is actually a report on login trends and not about actual members of the King of Social Networking and the same reports also point to a seasonal trend that would have more users accessing their Social Network Sites with their Smart Phones and Tablets that may or may not have a native Facebook Interface.

It would be an interesting trend as the summer continues to see if this keeps happening to the biggest time waster on the Interwebz (yes I still play BeJewelled Blitz WAY TOO MUCH)!!

The Browser Wars are heating up once again.  I remember in the early days of the Internet the battle was between IE and Netscape Communicator…the tight integration of IE with the Windows OS help push it to a near monopoly despite its buggy nature.  5 versions of Microsoft’s Browser the battle for our “clicks” still wages on but I was pouring over some statistics from www.w3schools.com and there seems to be some contradiction to who owns top Spot right now.  Many reports that I have read recently had IE and Firefox numbers reversed but I have followed the w3schools stats for a while and find it to be pretty consistent.

2011 Internet Explorer Firefox Chrome Safari Opera
May 24.9 % 42.4 % 25.9 % 4.0 % 2.4 %
April 24.3 % 42.9 % 25.6 % 4.1 % 2.6 %
March 25.8 % 42.2 % 25.0 % 4.0 % 2.5 %
February 26.5 % 42.4 % 24.1 % 4.1 % 2.5 %
January 26.6 % 42.8 % 23.8 % 4.0 % 2.5 %

Now if I could only get my IT Department to fully support Firefox I would be a much happier camper but the surge of popularity of Google’s Chrome Browser and the coveted #2 spot is quite an accomplishment.  Pushing out IE and starting to close the gap on Firefox.

Tomorrow I will be placing the 5 major players in the Browser Wars through their paces.  Considering I have a good mix of OS options to work with it will be across platforms as well.  What Browser do you use?

Google has setup a way for each and everyone of us to quickly go through and check what connections are being made to us.  By using the Google Dashboard and the new “Me on the Web” feature you can setup search alerts and more to check the Interwebz for our spider threads that reach across continents.

I will definitely be adding this to my list of regular things to do as I continue to build my “social profile” and make the connections.  An interesting tidbit that I did find is the posting of some work that I did with a prospective client several years ago that points their connections to reach out to me with regards to a VDI implementation.

Google…I am Humbled.

The Google Dashboard is quickly becoming my favorite aspect of the king of Search and in one quick step lets me manage all things Google that I interact with.

For more on how to make the most out of this great new feature I recommend a visit to my friends at “search engine land” the key takeaway from the extensive tutorial is:

“”Your online identity is determined not only by what you post, but also by what others post about you — whether a mention in a blog post, a photo tag or a reply to a public status update. When someone searches for your name on a search engine like Google, the results that appear are a combination of information you’ve posted and information published by others.”

As I build out my Personal Brand and connect with my clients past, present and future, the Google “Me on the Web” will be my compass.

Check it out and check yourself out…I would be interested to know where you rank when you type in your own name or email address.

Cheers and have a great day,

Chris J Powell
