Open Letter to Bystanders and Do Nothing Onlookers

Technology is a wonderful thing, don’t get me wrong but it is not ok to stand by and watch or worse…pull out your Smart Phone and record the events for posterity (or a moment of Youtube fame).  I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of this world we live in be sucked into a cycle of depravity and glory because we as a people choose to do nothing.

Recent events both in my life and in the world in general have me thinking that it is it time that we as a society take a lesson from our Grandparents and stop standing idly by when there are things that we can do right now to put a stop to the things around us that are morally repugnant.

I wonder this, at what point did we as a society decide that we would ignore the need for us to act as a community and protect those that need protecting the most which is really anyone who can not defend themselves…and worse, at what point did we go from ignoring the situation to feeling the need to post this kind of event on Social Media instead of intervening?

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity once again to step in to the defense of someone who was unable, unwilling or just to scared to defend herself.

While walking home Friday Afternoon after work, at a major intersection a man in his mid to late 40’s pushing and shoving a woman.  I took out my headphones because there seemed to be a one sided yelling match going on, only to hear the man yell “Get moving Slut” and “I am gonna kick your Ass Bitch” as he pushed her into the cross walk when the light changed.  I am not a violent man but I am not the type of person who will stand idly by and let a fellow human being be assaulted (unlike the 10 people that were on that side of the street and did nothing).

As I approached the man I angled over towards him allowing his victim to get ahead of him and in a cathartic release gave the man a push that to my surprise sent him flying back nearly a meter.  I remember telling the man over and over “Don’t Lay Hands on A Woman”…but without much surprise he wasn’t really listening and decided it best to try to attack me as well.

The good thing was, the woman who was being attacked looked at me as the crowd of onlookers grew…and I swear I saw her say thank you before she continued on her way…but the man who was drunk or stoned also went the same way.

One of the onlookers approached me as I continued down the street to say…”Thanks for stepping in, I am too much of a Pussy to do anything”….really…that is your excuse.

There are far more good people out there than there are bad people…that is just a fact…but in words of Charles F Aked (c1916):

That’s all the devil wants of the son of God—to be let alone. That is all that the criminal wants of the law—to be let alone. The sin of doing nothing is the deadliest of all the seven sins. It has been said that for evil men to accomplish their purpose it is only necessary that good men should do nothing.”

Lets think about this for a moment…if you are reading this and whether you are religious or not religious…the deadliest of the the Seven Deadly Sins…Sloth…above Lust and Greed and Wrath…Sloth is the deadliest sin.  Not just a Sin against God…but a Sin against all of Humanity.

Is it ok to stand by and watch events unfold?  I say no…it is not ok.  Being an onlooker may be safe but it in no way makes you any less guilty of the crime than the person actually committing it…because YOU ALLOWED IT.  YOU CONDONED IT.  YOU GAVE THE CRIME A VOICE!

To all those who feel that playing it safe is better than playing it right…check your moral compass…I think it is pointing in the wrong direction!
