Social Media Monday – Your Personal Brand

Do you have a Personal Brand?  What does your online presence say about you?  Is there a reason why your current employer, future employer, contacts, customers and vendors would give a second thought about anything you post?

That is the challenge that anyone who is trying to build an online presence into a Personal Brand faces.  Most of the people that I work with say…”I don’t have anything real to say…so why say anything” and in many ways I agree.  Personally, I don’t need to know where you are every minute of every day, I don’t need to know your innermost bodily functions or what calorie consumption you have…but I do want to hear more about what is going on in your head…your likes, dislikes and your PERSONAL STORY

What Social Media does really well is it democratizes the sharing of information.  Gone are the days when you exclusively need to search for everything you need.  Your Personal Brand can be built upon the connections you have made in your Professional Life and extended out to the connections that you have made.

I am far from a Personal Branding expert but for the past 16 months I have been pretty darn active, tripling my LinkedIn Connections, building a solid Twitter Following, Google+ has become my favorite Social Network and even Facebook has made the crossover and the lines between Personal and Professional are appropriately blended.

So if I am not an expert…why should you care what I have to say?  I am living proof that doing…is 90% of the battle.  You can listen and at times even pay for the advice, support and guidance of a Social Media Expert and this may assist you in getting started but the reality is…what they are helping you with is building a better, faster, smarter you and that means YOU are going to have to do some of the heavy lifting.

So lets look at the Personal Brand of Chris J Powell aka Krispy.

It really started on April 26, 2011 when I posted my first blog post and then tweeted, posted and connected my thoughts to anyone who would listen.  Did I get a million person following instantly?  Not a chance but my clients were the first to pick up on the fact that I had something to say beyond just asking them for money or helping with their technology challenges and soon enough…there was rarely a day that I did not receive a comment from a colleague, client or potential customer about my Social Media Activity.

I focus on Tech…that is my passion.  I live an breathe Tech and for the clients that I work with…that works.  For others, your passion may be exercise or Professional Sports or Family.  Blog about what you love.  Connect deeper into the lives of those you interact with on a professional level by letting the true you come out.

Humanity is the most social animal out there and while the communities we live in are built upon the human interaction that we have with each other…online communities are built the exact same way…and don’t require any physical infrastructure to support them.  I have connections that span 23 different time zones and while most of my posts are done first thing in the morning here in Canada…they are read, shared and commented on 24/7/365 days per year.

I am going to be changing up some of the ways that have my Social Media presence out there and hopefully in the next little while, there will be a new unity to all my form and function.  Deeper connections around what I post, personal videos on my YouTube Channel…and I have some great pictures to finally post on Flickr…but what about the old standards of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+?  Well that is going to be a bit of a surprise.  Does that mean that there is a new Avatar coming???  Or will Krispy finally reveal his true Identity to the world?

That being said, it is a holiday here in my neck of the woods and I am going to take full advantage of a do nothing, lazy summer day.  What are you going to do with your time today?

Cheers,

Chris J Powell
