Mark Zuckerberg is sitting pretty on his Billions and even though there is talk on the Interwebz about Facebook losing touch with its Teenage users…the Social Network is not likely to go the way of MySpace anytime soon.  But for those enterprising individuals who are looking to kick start their life of having their very own Social Media Network there is an option out there. Freely available and living life under the GNU General Public License, elgg is a platform on which to base a fledgling Social Media Empire upon.  There is a very active community that has developed nearly 1500 plugins with 100s of different themes to get your own Social Media Network off the ground. Top 5% on LinkedIn…are you?

This week has been mostly about Social Media and Social Networking for me.  On a regular basis my colleagues and customers ask me about my efforts in this space and surprisingly this week, I was notified by LinkedIn that I was in their Top 5% of most viewed Profiles in 2012! With more than 200 Million Members that places my profile in the top 10 Million Profiles which when you start to break things down a bit seems a little defeating but the reality is…there are 190 Million other profiles that have not been looked at as much as mine and that to me forms a real sense of pride.  Being in that not so exclusive group of 10 Million had me call into question the value of a Social Profile, is it really about the views or is it more about the connections? Social Media Monday – The Next Step of Social Media

It has been said many times that the number one business need is to get the right information to business decision makers so that they can make the right decisions.  That is a challenge for IT and has lead to more than one Big Data project that is trying to tie together multiple sources of data and build better Business Intelligence.  One of the cornerstones of that time of data collection though should be the effective use of Social Media both as a concrete way of communicating with your customers but also a way to focus on the long term innovation and building of demand for new products and services.
