A Long Look at Technology and My Life

Technology has had an hold on me for a long time, ever since I had the pleasure of sitting in a computer lab during my days of high school but it did not take a hold of me until much later in my life when everything I did started to revolve around the love hate relationship that I have with computers and devices.  The way that solving a problem by applying logic and code is something that has for a very long time taken me down some very different paths than what my life I thought I would live would be. I am the person that employers, friends and family turn to when they are having a “tech dilemma” and this has for a very long time intrigued me but only recently has technology made my life both more fulfilling and more difficult.  For many years I saw my love affair with the latest kit and language or process was a benefit but then came a new stage in my life. The world that I had lived in, was not … Read more

Leap of Faith in Technology

I remember growing up thinking that the future of today would be filled with embedded computers that we interface with nothing more than thought, that cybernetics would be a common thing and that the world would be a very dark place that corporations had taken over everything.  In many ways, that fantasy of a future that science fiction portrayed is partially true…but many of the things that science fiction (mainly in the Cyberpunk Genre) forecast have been stymied by one thing and one thing alone…POWER. For all the advancements in modern technology, the one thing that has not kept pace is our real ability to power the ever smaller, but more powerful devices that we use every day for an extended period.  Take our Smartphones…I rarely get more than 8 hours worth of use out of my Nexus 4 before being forced to plug the bugger in and give it a boost.  It is so bad that I tend to just plug it in most of the day at work, only unplugging it when I go for break and lunch. … Read more

When Does Technology Get a Little Creepy?

I have tattoos…and if Motorola/Google/Lenovo follows through with a recent patent application…our Technology will become embedded into our skin.  Yes that is right, according to US Patent Application 20130294617 the world will see us connecting to our devices using BlueTooth/NFC/Zigbee directly…no more douchebag earbud for us! For the most part, I am ok with companies and the government knowing what I am surfing, emailing and even to a degree knowing where I am but this…this is going just a bit too far and bringing us closer to a world of Cyborgs and Techno Wizardry like seen in the 90’s Role Playing Games Cyberpunk and Shadow Run.  I don’t know if I am comfortable with tech being used in this way…but in all likelihood, I would get one because of the convenience of being able to remotely connect with what ever the future holds for us (hopefully not quite like Oscar winner movie Her…that too is pretty darn creepy). The Things about Technology that FRUSTRATE ME

There is no doubt that I love technology and all the wonderful things that it can do for me. In a moment’s notice I can be checking out the latest gadgets coming out of China and then switch over and listen to all my favorite music in streaming glory, then hop into Gamer Mode and have a rousing game of Ghost Recon with some guys in Poland that I will never meet.  It is amazing how connected we are and how easy technology has made things…until we peel back the layers and want to make things really happen! There are things that truly still get my ire up when it comes to technology and I am far more calm about these things than most would be, I guess it is my time spent using Open Source products that has given me some perspective. 1. New OS on Old Hardware There has been more than one occasion in the past that I have tried to update the OS on an older computer, both for myself, for friends and for family only … Read more
