There has been a lot of speculation about the imminent demise of another Canadian Tech Giant with the layoff of 2,000 jobs at Waterloo, ON company Research in Motion (RIM). The fate of this Southern Ontario king of all things Tech has not been finalized and shifts in senior leadership as well as the realignment within their development teams…besides it could be worse, their next phone could be:
I don’t think that we will see an end to the maker of the BlackBerry in the near future but here is what some market analysts are saying:
“Cost-cutting is unlikely to change the competitive position for the company” or accelerate RIM’s revenue growth, BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis said.
“I think this is obviously realigning the cost structure to a new growth, or sales, reality,” said Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co.
What I see as the biggest news for RIM is that they will now become refocused on the future. The recent addition enabling of running Android apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook is a step in the right direction and it remains to be seen if the rumors of a new QNX Powered Super Phone are really on the horizon.
A little good news though appeared on my iPad the other day and upon reflection…I thought…now this is cool. Paper Airplanes have always been a secret weakness for me. I love trying out new designs, test flying huge prototypes and when my work has their annual “Carrier Battle” I place in the top 3 but this is now a game changer!
Smart Phones are quickly becoming the bane of my existence. The continued wonkiness of my Motorola Milestone are frustrating enough but now there was a recent release of a batch of new “Super Phones” that I am now battling with the $500 + no contract price. Too many choices…I kind of long for the days when there was only one or two and who knows if I had jumped on the BlackBerry bandwagon in the early 2000’s maybe…just maybe there would not be the problems with RIM today?
Well it was a quick post today as I unfortunately over slept but with just 2 days left in the week, a Long Weekend on the Horizon and a week of intense competition around the corner…I must get off to the grind.
Have a great day!
