The Quest for New

I am not sure what it is about the concept of New that has many of us working harder, saving up or worse…going into debt to achieve it.  New is nice, it is shiny, it tends to smell nice (nothing beats the new car smell) but I wonder…has this Quest lead the Western world down a path that it can not recover from?  Since I did the grand reset of my life earlier this year I have taken stock of what I want, what I need and what I have and when it comes to New…for the most part I have opted for the concept of New to Me.

Reduce-Reuse-Repurpose-300x102

Some things in my life are New there is no doubt about it that purchasing underwear from a Thrift Store is not high on the priority list and while I am in the market for a New Smartphone, I would not be against picking up a used one from Kijiji or eBay.  All of the furniture that I have has been repurposed from my previous life or from thrift stores but for the most part, we live in a consumer driven society that seems hell bent on the building of New Stuff that we don’t need, and can’t afford.

It seems that the economy is built around this desire of the masses to wait in line for 5 hours to get an iPhone 6 Plus that breaks when you put it in your pocket driving us back to that same line to get another device.

Is this sustainable?

In taking stock of the things that I want and need…much of what I need, I can repurpose from other items…so that leaves me with the wants…and when I look at that, it brings me to “New Stuff”.

This “New Stuff” that I want includes:

2015-ford-f-150-in-detroit-front-side-view-300x199

Sony-XBR55X900BIncanto-Serius-300x230

New-Home-300x168

When it comes to Wants and Needs though there is a huge difference.  I don’t need any of the items in this list…would I like any of them…sure and if there is an very wealthy person out there that has some extra cash that they would like to share would I turn a gift horse in the mouth…not on your life but I would likely not get any of these items (well maybe the expresso machine) even if I had unlimited resources.

I am a simple man, with simple needs.  I lived life beyond my means for too long and now I am more than happy with having a full fridge, a full heart and when the planets align a full home.

Repurpose the things that you need…find them at Garage Sales and Thrift Shops and save yourself and the world around you…one small act at a time.

Cheers,

Krispy
