This week’s Rant falls into 3 very different catagories. The “I can’t wait”, the “hmmm, interesting” and the “WTF”?
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt made a juicy release at the Salesforce.com Dreamforce conference last week. The newest version of Android can be expected out in October/November and is intended to create a unified Android OS for both the Smartphone and Tablet. Also known as Android 4.0 it brings together the different builds found in the 2.x and 3.x streams and makes one OS that will work on any Android Device.
To quote Mr. Schmidt:
We have a New Operating System, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone is really excited about.”
This will usher in two new Super Phones for the Holiday Shopping season and should release at around the same time as the iPhone 5. The Samsung Nexus Prime and Droid Prime will be two handsets that focus on taking down their arch rival Apple and the latest and greatest from Android should assist in the “takedown”.
I know that as a lover of all things Ubuntu, when I think of the Linux OS developed and distributed by Canonical, I think of Desktops and Laptops first, servers a distant second but Canonical is working with IBM to get the OS certified on the IBM System P Power and the System z mainframes.
This certification will open the door to a wider acceptance of the Ubuntu ecosystem within the enterprise that for Linux has been dominated by Red Hat and SUSE but a renewed focus on the Data Center will continue to strengthen the overall offering that Ubuntu can bring to the table each 6 months and make in roads into the enterprise and hopefully deeper into the North American market on desktops and laptops.
Straight out of the strange but true file there is a new App available for your smartphone that is designed to help you find an available washroom / loo when you are in need of the facilities. The app call Cloo is not available for download yet (I couldn’t find it in the Canadian Market or the Canadian App Store) but I am still taken aback by the outright hilarity of this attempt to make money from the unused flushes of our toilets. Check out their website at www.cloo-app.com.
On their About Us Page it goes on to explain what they are about but I have also included a strange but true video to help each of us wrap our heads around the online rental of our toilets.
CLOO’ is based on one simple truth— we all have to pee. Though in urban cities finding a clean, available restroom is difficult & frustrating. That’s where CLOO’ comes in.
CLOO’ is a community of registered users who choose to share their bathrooms and make city-living easier, while earning a small profit. Using social media connections, CLOO’ shows what friends you have in common with the host, turning a stranger’s loo into a friend of a friend’s loo.
Well that is the extent of my thoughts for the week, I have been feeling like I have been in a 12 round prize fight and have lost every round. Hopefully today is the day that I come out of the corner and land the knock out punch to wrap up this week!
