A new feature will be a look to the wonderful world of Apps. This is a pretty broad term but for the purposes of Krispy’s Rants…I will be looking at Mobile Applications, and more specifically, applications that I am able to run on both my Apple iPad and my Android Phone. Consider it a compare and contrast of sorts because many apps available on both systems freely and to get a sense of the continuity and use off an App it should be at least similar in both formats. So with a Million Apps to choose from…which earned the privilege to be first?
Zite is a free personalized magazine for your iPad that automatically learns what you like and gets smarter every time you use it. Zite delivers all the great news, articles, blogs, and videos you want – and helps you discover new stuff that you’ll love.
It does exactly that and does it very well. It learns from you and has an innate ability to really put focus behind what you want to read and keep up to date with. I have been using Zite on my iPad for well over a year and it recently brought out an Android version so I am now NEVER without my “reading list”.
I use Zite for many purposes but the primary is to keep up to date with the topics that I write about here each day. The first App that I open each day is Zite (ok right after Email on my phone but is Email really an App?) and “thumb” through several key topics (such as Social Media Mondays). I have set up several custom searches in various topics but the system also connects to my Twitter, Google Reader, Delicious and Pocket (formerly known as “ReadItLater”) accounts to help customize my reading habits and increase the relevancy of what is being pushed my way.
The same choices I make on my iPad for casual reading on the sofa or over morning coffee is then applied to the slightly smaller screen of my Motorola Droid Razr. This means when I drop the wife and daughter off to spend hours shopping for what ever it is they spend hours shopping for (yeah…I am that guy) I have something besides play Angry Birds to do.
I have tried apps like Flipboard and have even added this Blog to the mix on Google Currents but I don’t find that they are as accurate or as easy to navigate through the stories.
The real win for me though…is that even when I am not going to dive deeper into a story that I have read, I am given several options while scrolling through the news. I am able to give the content a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down, request more content from the source, add extra related subjects or share the content on Twitter, Facebook, “Pocket” or send an email with the link to the original story.
This is one of my absolute MUST HAVE apps and I strongly recommend it to everyone.
As far as the rating system…I will borrow the same concept that I have with my OS Sunday Reviews and use the Dozen Donut concept (the fuller the box the better the App). Zite for me definitely earns:
