Conditioned Air…Life is good!

With our luck, now that we have an Air Conditioner the summer will be over, no more heat and we will have no use for the Air Conditioner we bought yesterday but the fact that it physically sucked the humidity out of our living areas in less than one hour yesterday is truly a testament to modern technology.  While A/C may not be a technology that I would ever really think about…after the sweltering heat this week I wanted to give a great big shout out to those who have helped make this 109 year old technology both affordable and capable of changing our lives!

1902 – Willis Carrier builds the first air conditioner to combat humidity inside a printing company.

1922 – The first air conditioned movie theatre opens in Los Angeles (Grauman’s Metropolitan Theatre).

1940 – Packard is the first car with ‘factory air’ as an option

1969 – Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon in space suits with life support and cooling  systems.

2002 – Shipments of central air conditioners and air source heat pumps hit a record with 6,746,326 units shipped.

2011 – Krispy and his family get cool and stop the melting of their home, family and pets

Thank you to the men and women who build, design, repair and service the A/C Units for all of us.  Your efforts and skills may go unnoticed most of the year but on those HOT days of July and August…forever more I will remember your story.

If you would like to see the abridged history of the Air Conditioner or other great engineering achievements of the 20th Century, head over to http://www.greatachievements.org/ an interesting site.

  1. This design is steller! You certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
