It doesn’t matter what job you do or what your business produces, sells or consults on, unless you have been under a rock for the past couple of years I am sure you have heard some one or read some where that Innovation is the new Black!
But if Innovation in Business is the “Next Big Thing” and “Everyone is Doing It” then how can you differentiate yourself? Rather than looking at business strategies that are meant to transform a sluggish business in an economy that may very well take another 5 years to recover…I figured I would take a look at personal innovation and how the things that you do personally and professionally can be used to both innovate your life but also your career.
Over at VuVan.com there is a great definition of Personal Innovation:
Personal Innovation is about innovating yourself and making yourself better at whatever it is you do. If you have customers, and they are currently happy, take it to the next level and just wow them with more, if you think you have reached a comfortable level of success, push yourself to grow even further. Just like technology and products, without innovation you may risk being left behind as others realize the importance of innovation and does something about it.
So lets take a look at this statement.
Make Yourself Better at Whatever YOU Do!
It doesn’t matter if you are at the bottom of the corporate ladder or at the pinnacle of your career, there is always room for improvement. This goes for your Professional and your Personal YOU. I have dealt with customers in one form or another for my entire working career. I have seen the good, the bad and the indifferent and the one thing that I constantly remember is that being honest with them has an amazing effect. There seems to be a world of falsehood that has veiled our lives for far too long and the simple act of being honest and up front about everything that you do, has very strong positive effects on business and personal relationships.
Wow Them with More!
This doesn’t mean that you have to give them the farm, add perks or be a push over. It does mean that every customer and every person that we interact with everyday has a preset expectation about what is the norm when it comes to the things that you do. This can be based on your personality, your demeaner or your job role/title. Give them more than they expect. Focus on the Customer Service that is so lacking in this digitally enhanced world that we live in. Become a hyper reality version of yourself that is all about exceeding expectations.
What Do People Expect?
Expectations are things that are constantly evolving and changing. That is one of the wonderful things about Innovation as it means that you can reinvent yourself and your role in this great big world.
If you work in Sales…then put your Customers Needs first. If you are in Customer Service…then be a Trusted Advisor. An Engineer…build and design for the End User, not yourself.
All these things are all fine and good, but how can you radically or even mildly change how you are doing things that can help you achieve more success by Innovating Yourself? It is not going to be easy, expect to commit time, effort, energy and even some money to this cause. Nothing in life is truly free, but it doesn’t matter if you are making minimum wage or pulling down a 6 figure salary committing to personal innovation is a way to get the most out of the things that you do, and enjoy them and life that much better!
