The hottest day of the year is about to settle in on South Western Ontario with the Projected High looking like it will be around 36 C or 97 F and with the Heat Index it is going to feel more like 48 C or 119 F. I will be melting by noon and looking forward to doing as little as possible even if that is not going to be realistic! To put this heat wave into perspective, the forecast for Dubai today is set to be 40 C or 104 F but with none of the extreme mugginess that comes with a Canadian Heatwave.
Even more of a dramatic change, exactly 6 months ago we were at the start of a major Snow Storm to start the week off with a bang dumping 19 cm (nearly 12 inches) of snow onto our already overloaded city.
I will try to keep myself from melting as I move from point A to point B today but I can make no promises and if there is not a post tomorrow…I am likely a puddle of Goo somewhere in Downtown London!
Apple Sets Quarterly Sales Records
Apple made announcements yesterday that has set the financial world on fire as well. Now I am no Financial Analyst but when a company that has sufficient cash reserves that it was actually predicted they may purchase a US Telecom carrier earlier this year…it is a bit scary to think of just how much money this company is bringing in.
Here are the highlights:
- Record quarterly revenue of $28.57 billion (compare to $15.70 billion in the year-ago quarter)
- Record quarterly net profit of $7.31 billion (compare to $3.25 billion, or $3.51 in the year-ago quarter)
- Gross margin was 41.7% (up from 39.1% in the year-ago quarter)
- International sales accounted for 62% of this quarter’s revenue
- 20.34 million iPhones sold (a 142% unit growth over the year-ago quarter)
- 9.25 million iPads sold (a 183% unit growth over the year-ago quarter)
- 3.95 million Macs sold (a 14% unit increase over the year-ago quarter)
- 7.54 million iPods (a 20% unit decline from the year-ago quarter)
With the number of early adopters of the new OSX Lion Operating System and the “reversal of the mouse scrolling” I would agree with some assumptions that Steve Jobs is really laughing his way to the bank right now. A company that is selling 70 iPads and 146 iPhones per minute right now is doing something right, I may not agree with the concept of a locked down, proprietary OS or the restrictions placed on using their products with Linux but you can not dispute that they are truly a power house! A funny thing did arise in China though as 3 Fake Apple Stores opened up in Beijing recently…and from what I can tell they are exact replicas of the real thing!
Google+ up to 20 Million Users!
I am finding that more and more I am leaving Facebook behind for the more intimate and interactive connection that I have with my G+ friends. In just 3 weeks the number of registered users for Google’s Social Network Google+ has grown to over 20 million. What is amazing about this number is that it has been through invitation only allowing Google to methodically ensure scalability before releasing it into the wild…there has been some hickups but I have really noticed nothing that would keep me from turning my back on Facebook.
What does this mean to the other Social Network giants? Facebook and Twitter should be more than a little frightened. While G+ is a barren landscape and a peek into the future of Social Networking and as it continues to grow…the Power of the Circle will be undeniable!
I recommend checking out and following Graham Smith at his Tumblr Site called Google+ Apps and Icons a solid site that is a glimpse of how it will be more an interaction with other parts of Google that will be the strength of G+ than the information overload from Facebook!
Well, it is time to leave the comfort of this relatively cool basement and venture out into belly of the beast…wish me luck…I really hope I don’t melt!
