I figured that it was time to bring back a quote from one of the great minds of the 20th Century:
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” – Albert Einstein
When we top to take a deep look at our own reality it is important that it is with jaded eyes that we look to what is real to us in that moment. The amazing thing is that it is our own reality, something that can be shaped and molded to what we want to see as an outcome, the only problem with that is that the same rings true for every person around you.
The Reality for your Boss is that they want more from you, the Reality from your Spouse is that they want more with you, the Reality from your Children is that they want more of you. There is a finite amount of YOU to go around so your reality is part ensuring that your perception of this reality is in tune with what the expectations of YOU are.
For most, this does not mean living up to the commitment of a Daily Post on a personal Blog but there are daily check points that you should ensure you are meeting so that there is an alignment between what your reality is (from your eyes) and the reality that others perceive from you.
This is one of the main reasons why I have become so very goal oriented with multiple checkpoints to keep me grounded. All of my goals are a physical sample of the reality that I want to project. I sit with my Manager and we pour over past performance and then come up with the “What will you do for me NOW” scenario that we can both live with. If this exercise in both Sanity and Reality is not part of your interaction with your manager than I can not recommend enough to set time aside so that you can achieve the Reality that is expected of you.
Back to the title question though…What is Your Reality?
In a world that has Petabytes of Data flowing past our eyes on any given day it is important to find a way of grounding yourself and being able to really look to what you want out of your life. Whether you are a Sales Professional, Computer Programmer or Ditch Digger…your goals will shape your reality.
No where else in your life are there as many choices that are open to you and the next step is completely up to you but the reality that builds from your choices today will shape the perception of both yourself and those around you for some time to come. The Reality that I share with those around me is one of a keen sense of community and focusing on the greater good (especially when it benefits me but also to the collective team that I work with). The Goals that I set for myself last week actually were translated out to our team goals and as a Top Performer I am all for having serious stretch goals like 150% growth and Prospecting targets that equal 30% of the current value of our Service books.
My personal goals all stem from my work goals, and while it is My Perception that I walk out the doors at 5PM each day it is my Family’s Reality that I never completely turn off my work mind.
My favorite posts are those I do on Monday’s, more than all the Geekery that fills the rest of the week. If this post stimulated some hair follicles for you, leave me a comment or even better…send me an email firstname.lastname@example.org.
