Will Flex Screen Smart Phones be the NEXT Big Thing?

On the heals of the recent announcement from Nokia of their Flexible Screen at Nokia World this week, Samsung has also jumped into the Frey with an announcement that they will be aiming to launch a SmartPhone that will sport a bendable display early next year.

Samsung stated that it expects its new line of phones to hit the market in the first half of next year.

“The flexible display, we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part,” said spokesman Robert Yi during an earnings call.  “The application will probably start from the handset side.”

Now concept phones showing the future of flex screens have been around for a while but it looks like the world of the flexible OLED (organic light emitting diode) an also be fixed to a rigid case to maintain a curve.  The OLED works by using materials taht ensure each pixel in the unit generates light, making it easier to use than LCD screens which require a flexible screen but also have a backlight…which consumes power…and on some units a lot of it!

Now there have been some pretty funky phones put out over the past few years but the best sellers have always maintained a pretty consistent form factor…in the 2000’s it was the flip phone, the SmartPhone world has really embraced the Bar style…will any of these top the list and create a new form factor?

2012 is definitely shaping up to be a very interesting year.  Now without the vision of Steve Jobs to drive the next innovative Design…it will be very interesting to see where the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5 go from here.  Competition  is heating up…Samsung just became the worlds largest phone producer so what will your next gadget look like?

Well just a few more hours until the weekend and after the week I have had I look forward to sinking into the sofa and vegging.
