If it wasn’t bad enough for Apple that the Kindle Fire has hit the ground running with preorders already in the millions, a super affordable tablet alternative is hitting the streets of Calcutta at an unbelievable $60 retail and they are being subsidized by the Indian Government for students to just $35!!
Now this will be a game changer as it puts mobile Internet access potentially into the hands of 1.2 Billion of the worlds poorest, providing them access to the World Wide Web and the ability to connect, learn and expand! Being dubbed the Aakash which means “Sky” in Hindi will support video conferencing, two USB ports and have a 3 hour battery life…while no high end tablet like we are used to in the West who can complain about a $60 price tag? And even more impressive for this Canadian is that it was designed by the Canadian firm Datawind!
Stats for the device:
|Screen Size||7 Inch|
|Resolution||800 x 400|
|Storage||2 GB NAND|
Now just how affordable is this magical device…well for the Indian population there has been a shift in wages over the past few years and according to www.averagesalary.com the average wage in India (based on those surveyed) is 907,000 Rs which is right around $20,000 USD per year which is a major step up from just a few years ago but I have a feeling that this does not take into full account the masses living in the urban slums making a fraction of what those who have access to the Internet to fill out the survey would make.
iOS just around the corner
Now I had toyed around with the idea of trying to install Apple’s latest OS on my iPad early but just did not feel like going through the pain of testing a Beta anything from yet another Proprietary company but with the release date literally right around the corner (October 12-14) and well I figured I would do a quick run through of what I am actually looking forward to from my iPad upgrade:
Gone will be the incredibly annoying popups that interrupt my games and web browsing at the worst possible times…more than once I have been running for a Touch Down in Madden ’11 or leading a race in RenoAirRaces only to be paused while I get notified of a potential upgrade, MyPad update or new mail coming through!
Please dear god figure out a way to make the camera actually take normal pictures! I love the Facetime feature with the front facing camera but the rear facing camera has been a complete let down and hopefully this is fix that will apply to the iPad and not just the iPhone/iPod!
As quirky and geeky as it may seem, I am most interested in playing with this tool and diving into the world of having a digital assistant that is at my beck and call. The real question is how close will it take us to the Apple Vision of the Future from 1987?
In what may be the biggest let down of 2011, the iPhone 5 was indeed not released this year and Apple opted for an internal face lift of their existing iPhone 4 instead. Now I know of more than a few long time Apple Fanboys who will be looking to dump their beloved iPhone because of a little thing that I like to call SCREEN ENVY!
When I got my new Samsung Galaxy S II and let these same people touch and feel how light, how big and how responsive the Super AMOLED screen was I have been able to convert more than one over to the Android Army and now with the phone basically being a clone of the original iPhone…well will we see a mass exodus from the worlds most popular phone?
Now the upgrades that Apple did make though are quite impressive:
|Dual Core A5 Chipset|
|UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz);GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)|
|CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz)4|
|960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi|
The iPhone has never appealed to me and once again I can honestly say that I feel just a little underwhelmed considering I can upgrade my Samsung to 64GB storage for far less than the difference in price from the 32 to the 64 GB models…$100 for 32GB??? wow
Well that is it for me today…I hope you all have a great day and a great weekend. Here in Canada it is Thanksgiving a time for extreme over eating, visiting long lost family and well as every weekend is for us now…Football.
